Energy-efficient LED lighting technology

Phase out of incandescent light bulbs

The Australian Government plans to works with its states and territories to gradually phase out the all inefficient incandescent bulbs, with the first stage being an introduction of import restrictions of general purpose lighting service bulbs (GLS) from 1 February 2009.

Savings to the economy and environment from the initiative appear considerable and is expected to save more than four terrawatt hours of electricity (the equivalent of decommissioning a smaller coal fired power plant), more than $400 million dollars per year in savings for energy consumers and four million tonnes of greenhouse gas emmissions
